Perfect jobs; Extinction tech; How to decide
💡Think
I’ve spoken before about decision paralysis, and the impact it can have on our progress; sometimes freezing us entirely. Hello, creative block.
A way to ease how we approach these situations is by applying what’s called the “one way or two day door” method.
This sounds hacky and like something you’d hear on an MBA course, and to be honest it probably is, but is useful because it frames every decision against its longer term impact.
A one way door decision is something that can’t be reversed (is extremely difficult to). Because of its high stakes, this is something we have the affordance to deliberate on. Examples: asking for a payrise, accepting a new position or job, or committing at board level to delivering a project within X weeks.
A two way decision of the reverse – it’s something that can be changed back if it doesn’t work out. For example, pushing a fix to your code, accepting a meeting invite for a sales call, or committing to a first version of your design. As you can imagine, with this approach being so flexible, it means you can take a lot longer to make that call.
Bear this in mind the next time you’re faced with a task. Can my decisions here be reversed and how long should I take to deliberate?

❶ In search of the perfect job
Do you enjoy your job? Is it your dream job? What does that even mean? It’s so easy for us to romanticise and fantasize jobs based on what we think they entail, but the reality is that even the most cushy job has its downsides. Imagining that dream (and unrealistic) position just isn’t good for our mental health.

❷ CRISPR and the splice to survive
Here’s a science number to keep things fresh this week. Did you know that there are companies that sell gene editing kits? Yeah, I’m a little alarmed too. This long read takes a look at a company that is developing tech in an attempt to prevent species from going extinct. Oh, it can also cause them too as well. Spooky.

❸ How to decide, the startup edition
This is startup focussed, but its approach is more of a self reflection approach. In fact, it informed the opener to today’s email, so you’re getting a double whammy. The author presents a great decision making framework which they employed on their business to grow it massively.

It’s important to note when we’re feeling the signs of a possible burnout or stretching of our ability to cope, and this short podcast takes a look at some of the things to look out for.
