💡Think
Hey everyone 👋
There’s a constant debate, at least in design, about whether templates, guides, and prebuilt assets help or hinder the creative process.
Every team and individual is different, but what I do know from personal experience is that the creation of the building block assets themselves is part of the creative process.
I wouldn’t be able to get to the end result without the manipulation of the lego bricks that make the final model. Like I said, this might be a me thing, but I’d bet against assuming people will be creative just through the act of assembling already decided ideas. It’s a loss-leading exercise to me.
See you next time!

❶ You can't reach the brain through the ears
No matter how much experience you have or how many times you have learned the hard lessons, your advice will often be ignored by people because they need to experience those trials themselves.
There’s something about the context of experience with helps us understand things truly, rather than just being told the facts. This is why it’s so much easier to learn a new skill by doing, rather than endlessly studying it.
I really enjoyed this article, it’s slightly different to the kind of stuff normally shared, but highly recommended nonetheless.
❷ The birth of the personal computer
Presumably, a lot of you reading this are Apple nerds. In which case, you’ve come to the right place. This article looks into the history of the Apple II (two) machine, and how it set the groundwork for why we all have one in our pockets now. Hint: software, and personalisation.
❸ They did it for the clicks
It feels weird to see every 2000s student’s favourite website startup Buzzfeed fall so far from grace – maybe they needed more quizzes? – but it’s a lesson in how being just at the right place at the right time can create success, but quickly obliterate when the zeitgeist shifts.
This article is a look into where Buzzfeed came from, and where it is going…AI apparently.

British art critic David Sylvester talking about how “artists must be allowed to go through bad periods” in order to be successful in a video from 1969 (30 second Twitter video)
Great article about previous tech giant Intel, and how they turned Apple down as a supplier of chips. I guess that was a huge mistake

The spatial race
If you love audio, engineering, or both of those mixed in with a bit if history, this is for you.
It’s a story about the man who invented a lot, but the exploration in this podcast is his achievements with audio; specifically creating the stereo sound.
I’ve described this in the most dry way possible, but the podcast is interesting I promise!
